Merck KGaA, Darmstadt
Modular automation in the lab: one of the first Process Orchestration Layers worldwide
- Task
- Automate lab plants in a modular way, based on a standard (MTP) for which, at the time, there were neither finished systems nor proven concepts.
- My role
- Getting to grips with the standard, programming the first PEAs, leading the development of the Process Orchestration Layer (POL) based on zenon, verification in the lab together with lab technicians and process specialists.
- Result
- A system brought to market readiness. Merck presented it publicly in July 2022 as the first company in the chemical industry to do so; COPA-DATA documented the project as a success story.

- Task
- Win over an international pharma customer in a platform decision.

- Technical design and evaluation, alignment with a wide range of stakeholders, and setting up and running various test systems and PoCs.
I was technically responsible for a large part of the acquisition. - Result
- This project is the origin of the engineering credo I have carried into every project since: easy to deploy, easy to maintain.

Medical devices into the IT infrastructure
- Task
- Integrate medical devices into hospital IT.
The interface between very different technologies and people in its purest form. - My role
- Administrator and system integrator: device integration, documentation, training, lots of communication.
- Result
- Devices that talk reliably to the IT systems in everyday clinical practice, and a great many satisfied nurses, doctors and patients.
